Predator Safety

Safety in areas with large predators in Europe and North America

Large predators are on the rise in parts of Europe and also in North America. This means that the chance of encountering a wolf, bear or puma also increases. In addition, more and more people are heading into the mountains and forests, often unprepared for encounters with these animals. In this course we discuss what to do and what not to do. You will also learn about the behavior and lifestyle of the different species. Where do they occur, what are the measures you can take to limit the risks and so on.

Do you visit areas with predators for recreation? Then I recommend that you take this course. Are you a guide? Then this course is actually a 'must'. Not only for your own safety, but also for the safety of the animals. When there are 'problems' with wild animals, it is almost always the animals that get the short end of the stick, while it is usually humans' fault. In addition, as a guide you certainly have an educational obligation towards your customers and the animals with whom you share the path. The more you know about animals, the smaller the risks are (if there is any risk at all).
Fear, misunderstanding and incidents are usually related to a lack of knowledge.

The course leader is Raoul Kluivers. Raoul has years of experience with large predators in Canada and Europe. For his work and as a hobby he goes into the forests, valleys and mountains in search of bears, wolves, pumas and other animals. In the meantime he has encountered 200+ bears, dozens of wolves, several lynxes and also a handful of pumas.

We discuss the following types
– Brown bear (European and Grizzly)
– American black bear
– Cougar
- Wolf
– Jackal
– Coyote
– European lynx
– Canada lynx
– Iberian lynx
– Bobcat / Red lynx
– Glutton
